The challenges of innovation

Digital Catapult Centres are focussed on innovation and economic growth in new creative industries. The team’s expertise are in developing innovation cultures, providing business mentoring and access to new technology platforms like Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and connected services through their dedicated 5G testbed.

Based on the feedback from the previous year’s cohort, they wanted to expand their capability to support the businesses design and development of innovative digital products and services.

Richard spoke to us about the idea of a UX Clinic, where the residents could come with their challenges and have a person they could go to for help with digital design.

Our solution

For the duration of the 2016/17 residency, we provided Digital Catapult Brighton residents User Experience coaching, taking their technologies and ideas and moving them into viable products and services using lean startup methods and User Centred Design principles.

Cross-business collaboration workshops

We ran workshops with business to teach founders valuable skills that ensure success such as how to create a Business Model Canvas, use Value Proposition Statements to set direction and Agile, iterative developments to create tests and validate Product Market Fit for their product through user testing.

School ended, what happened next?

Our work through Digital Catapult Brighton has resulted in a number of the resident startups working with us on a long term basis to further their skills and validate their products through lean startup practices.

We now work with a number of business founders through 1-2-1 UX coaching and mentorship, continuing their growth of meaningful business with purpose.

During the summer of 2017 we were invited to participate in a symposium for businesses in healthcare held a the Digital Catapult London HQ. We got to speak to leaders in artificial intelligence and big data based startups about the challenges that AI faces and how the healthcare industry needs to allow SMEs in for innovation to happen.
